Founded in 1990, ZEW is one of Europe’s leading research institutes in economics as well as a member of the Leibniz Association, a network of outstanding research institutes in Germany. ZEW’s principal mission is to study and design well-performing markets and institutions in Europe. It thereby pursues the following key objectives: • to conduct politically relevant research and • to provide evidence-based economic policy advice. Headed by Professor Achim Wambach, the president of the institute, and Thomas Kohl, the institute’s managing director, ZEW currently employs a staff of approximately 190, distributed across eight research units, four junior research groups, and three service departments. The sole shareholder of ZEW is the State of Baden-Württemberg. The Supervisory Board consists of eleven members and is chaired by Ulrich Steinbach, Ministerial Director and Head of the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg.
