The Department of Romance Languages is a diverse, multicultural, and plurilingual academic unit that researches and teaches i ... n French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish languages and cultures. It is the largest language, literature, and culture department in the American Northwest. The Department is composed of nationally and internationally distinguished faculty members of different national origins, and a body of committed and talented students pursuing minors, majors, M.A.s, and Ph.D.s in the French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. As well as academic programs, RL sponsors and supports numerous activities such as lectures, film festivals, study abroad programs, international conferences, and community events. Our mission is the production of knowledge of the languages, literatures, and cultures of the areas where Romance languages are spoken. We aim to provide our students with an extensive knowledge of the languages and cultures that we teach, as well as to foster their intellectual growth, create conscious members of a global community, and instill in them a profound awareness of social and cultural diversity of French-, Italian-, Portuguese-, and Spanish-speaking communities in the USA and abroad. read more
