The Mooting Society (MootSoc) is focused exclusively on mooting. Moots simulate court proceedings in which participants argue ... a fictional case using real statutes and case law. Students prepare a summary of their arguments, which is supported by a bundle of legal authorities. They then present their argument before a moot judge who evaluates the strength of their argument and presentation style and provides feedback on their performance. Hence, mooting helps students to develop legal skills in researching and legal argumentation. It also offers a number of excellent opportunities for students to advance their academic skills. For instance, first year students can hone their presentation and public speaking ability before participating in the compulsory moot as part of the Legal Systems and Reasoning (LSR) module in January. Moreover, many graduates mention that mooting was one of the highlights of their legal education at Southampton, as it brought the books and cases to life for them. In this way, we hope the mooting experience serves as a great foundation for students’ academic performance. Aside from preparing for their compulsory moot, first year students can also participate in the internal mooting competition in the second semester. MootSoc also gives students the chance to participate in competitions on the regional, national, and international level. For example, some of our most enthusiastic mooters have represented the university in India and Singapore in recent years. In short, mooting prepares students for the realities of legal practice by offering them an insight into professional legal etiquette and enhancing their ability to work under pressure and as part of a cohesive team.
