The UMass Belly Dance Club is an award winning Registered Student Organization at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Ou ... r goal is to teach students about the origin, technique, and culture of the beautiful art of belly dance. Our pieces reflect the diversity of belly dance styles in existence while honoring its traditional roots of western ballet and numerous folkloric dances. Each semester, we explore different variations of belly dance from around the world. The culture of UBDC is rooted in feminine empowerment, body positivity, and sisterhood. UBDC’s goal is to inspire and empower students to celebrate and love their bodies regardless of size, age, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or ability; thus raising self esteem and promoting a community of acceptance. UBDC’s passion is to share these goals, values, and talents with the UMass Amherst community. Members of UBDC have fun dancing together as a belly dance family and community, host great events, and help one another improve dance skills in an inclusive, fun and welcoming environment. The club maintains an active presence on the UMass Amherst campus and frequently performs at charity events and other university events. The club also regularly holds workshops for both the UMass Amherst Community and the general public to learn about the technique and culture of belly dance. In 2014, UBDC received the RSO of the year award. We meet every Monday night at 10:30 pm at the Rec Center in room 118 and Sunday night at 7:30 in room 215 of the Rec Center.
