Our Mission: to promote community inclusion, independence and growth for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential, employment, and cultural enrichment opportunities. People • UMAR serves more than 400 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout western NC each year. • UMAR employs nearly 220 trained staff—90% provide direct care or service. • Residential counselors in group homes provide on-site support 24/7. • UMAR has a volunteer board of 11 trustees and more than 300 community volunteers. Residential Services • 23 group homes, 9 apartments in: Asheville, Charlotte, Concord, Cornelius, Gastonia, Greensboro, Hayesville, High Point, Huntersville, Lincolnton, Reidsville, Statesville, and Winston-Salem. • Each UMAR group home houses 6 residents. • The annual operating cost for one home is $200,000-$350,000, depending on the needs (amount of care) each resident requires. Vocational Services • Vocational Services assists in finding jobs in several counties served by UMAR.
