The UK ELFM network brings together academic, industrial and public sector experts working in related fields. The aim of the ... network is to develop an active and engaged community through which a multidisciplinary vision and research agenda associated with enhanced landfill mining will be developed. The UK ELFM network will lead the UK’s innovation and accelerate knowledge transfer across the sector. With around 24,000 sites across the UK there is a significant opportunity to recover valuable resources, prevent long-term environmental issues and reclaim land for redevelopment. Enhanced landfill mining recovers valuable raw materials, contributing to the circular economy in addition to minimising future environmental risks posed by closed landfill sites. With increasing pressures on greenbelt and the need to unlock further development land the UK’s landfill legacy may hold the key to major land holdings across the country becoming available for development. Enhanced landfill mining offers the opportunity to boost climate resilience across the UK by removing potential environmental pollution buried underground. Further to this, with increasing pressures on land value, the need to bring forward housing schemes and infrastructure, former landfill sites could hold potential development sites relieving greenbelt pressure and delivering part of our green recovery and create thousands of jobs UK wide. The priority for ELFM, causing disruption to long-closed landfill sites, would include: - Recover valuable materials whilst reducing long-term pollution risks from the sites, fitting with the focus on critical raw materials and the circular economy; - Proactively deal with future high-risk sites, such as those which are likely to be affected by climate change (e.g. flooding), coastal erosion or developments (e.g. HS2); - Remediate the land for development of housing or commercial buildings. read more
