The Allied Air Forces Memorial is located at Elvington near York, on the site of the former WWll RAF Bomber Command base. It ... was the home of 77 Squadrons RAF and the only two French Heavy BomberSqaudrons of WWll - 346 "Guyenne" and 347 "Tunisie". Over 50 historic areoplanes are located on site including the only Halifax 4-engined bomber of 1943; Mosquito, Hurricane, Spitfire, Messerschmitt; The 20 acre memorial is alongside the 440 acre x 10,000ft international class runway, within a secure site and consists of gardens and special memorials to allied squadrons, most notably British, Canadian, French, Australian and New Zealand and the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The main memorial garden was opened by Group Captain Leonard Cheshire VC in 1984. The Station Chapel has standards from former squadrons and veteran associations and is the home of the National Air Crew Association Archive and the National Air Gunners association Archive. 3 Station Chaplains undertake memorial services and each September the Annual Allied Air Forces Memorial Day attracts hundreds of veterans and serving airmen and military units. In 2010 over 600 took part in the March Past and Service which also attracted over 2000 members of the public, making this one of the largest specific memorial events in UK. The Vice President of the Memorial is Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, Chief of the Air Staff. The Memorial is visited by around 100,000 people annually. read more
