Our hotel name refers to James Hoban, an Irishman born in Kilkenny in 1758. Having trained as an architect in Dublin, he emigrated to America at 19 years of age and established himself as an architect in Philadelphia. In 1792, he entered a competition to design the White House and his design was judged the winner by President George Washington. His design was generally based on Dublin’s Leinster House. The cornerstone of the famous house was laid in 1793 and work continued until 1801 (the name of our restaurant and bar) when it was finally completed. read more
