The Gresham Club arose from the ashes of the former London Capital Club, which, in turn, replaced the original Gresham Club. ... The first Gresham Club was established in 1843 as a dining club for the professional classes of the City of London. It was named after Sir Thomas Gresham, a celebrated merchant, who in 1566 founded The Royal Exchange and made a significant bequest to the Gresham College to promote the New Learning of Elizabethan times. The reformed Gresham Club has recreated the raison d’être of its original predecessor: a private members' club for professional gentlefolk, stimulating social and business interaction amongst like-minded members and their guests.
