The Democracy Forum was established in 2009 with the aim of promoting peace, democracy and harmony as an alternative to terro ... rism, dictatorship and discord. It is a not-for-profit organisation funded by supporters. The Forum’s first President was Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne. Stephen Hammond MP is the current President, and Justice Sir Mota Singh is Chairman. The Forum is supported by a wide range of people concerned about the threat to democracy from terrorism. Academics including Dr William Crawley and Dr Ruth Kathmuri, and MPs Tony Baldry, Richard Harrington and Varinder Sharma as well as journalists David Watts and Tom Deegan and Mr A S Jandu support the work of TDF. The Forum has hosted a number of seminars over the past several years and these have placed a strong emphasis on democracy, peace, the rule of law and human rights issues. The seminars were held at a number of different venues including Chatham House, Cambridge University, the London School of Economics, The Reform Club, the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The subjects of the seminars have covered a wide range of geo- political and economic issues such as The Silk Road, Gilgit Baltistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Terrorism and the Rule of Law and many other related topics. These seminars have generated ongoing debate. Their impact has been widespread across the general public and especially among MPs and academics, both at home and abroad, who have contacted The Democracy Forum to express their interest in collaborating with us on future activities/discussion groups and conferences. The Forum also produces a twice-monthly newsletter that focuses on global news with a special accent on democratic issues in the developed and developing world. It has been well received and led to contacts with those involved in work relating to democracy and human rights (for instance, the cases of Sarabjit Singh and Barbara Tucker). Page two of the newsletter covers various topics relating to religion, terrorism, economics, peace and democracy, and is written by established and respected journalists. read more
