Beyond the major ports of Hobart, Bell Bay, Burnie and Devonport, Tasports is also responsible for the management of a number of smaller ports around Tasmania – Triabunna on the east coast, Strahan on the State's west coast, Stanley and Smithton in the north west, and Ports of Grassy and Currie on King Island located about 100 nautical miles off the north west coast. The tourist and fishing village of Strahan is an important part of the west coast's infrastructure. Many thousands of tourists visit the township annually to travel deep into the Gordon River World Heritage Area on modern cruise boats that depart daily from Strahan Wharf. Strahan is also home to a sizeable fishing fleet which fish the waters of the west coast for crayfish and abalone. The Ports of Stanley and Smithton are managed by Tasmania Ports with assistance from a committee comprising local business people.
