It offers long-term professional support for children and families who need it. A single team assembled based on professional principles plays together for a 12-year period. The team is led by a mentor who is qualified to work with and lead groups. Purpose Icehearts is more than just a sports team. It is an approach designed to prevent social exclusion and promote well-being. Icehearts is a tool and partner for local authorities delivering core services. As a team sports-based approach offering recreational opportunities, Icehearts supports children as well as social workers and schools. The purpose of Icehearts is to prevent social exclusion, nurture social skills and give children safe long-term adult support through stages of emotional development. As a philosophy, Icehearts supports young people's development into confident and considerate team members. The approach is underpinned by a set of values aimed at providing equal opportunities to all children. Icehearts is a cross-sectoral approach that involves cooperation with social service and education professionals. The approach has received recognition and various awards, including the national Toivon Tuoja 2013 award, the Vuoden Kasvattaja 2012 award, the European Crime Prevention Award Most Innovative Project 2011, and Unicef Child Rights Award 2008.
