À ses débuts, la principale préoccupation de la SPCA était d’améliorer la situation des chevaux de trait. Aujourd’hui, elle est la plus grande société pour la protection des animaux au Québec. La SPCA de Montréal est un organisme à but non lucratif qui dépend presque exclusivement des dons du public pour effectuer son travail. Elle accueille et soigne près de 15 000 animaux abandonnés chaque année.
