Founded in 1880, our company was originally a spinning company using only wool fibres. By 1934 it was decided that the future ... of the business should be in hand knitting yarns sold directly to retailers. The company clearly needed a strong name under which to promote itself, which is when SIRDAR, meaning leader, was born. Changes in ownership have enabled Sirdar to continue to evolve over the years, most recently Sirdar was purchased by Blue Gem Capital Partners private equity firm and now forms part of The DMC Group, alongside DMC and Wool and The Gang. Sirdar is the UK market leader in hand knitting yarns as well has having a growing presence in exports markets, most notably the USA.
