September 1968, Robert J. Moore was hired in a dual appointment as the first Head Athletic Trainer for San Diego State Univer ... sity Athletics and as a tenure-track professor in the Physical Education Department. He had one athletic training student, Jim Hammond. By 1977, athletic training under the Physical Education major was developed with three athletic training-specific courses and a clinical internship program at SDSU. Students will complete a 64-unit degree program including 4 traditional semesters, and 2 summer semesters for a full 2-year program. Students will complete both academic and clinical coursework/experiences leading to eligibility for the Board of Certification, national certification examination as an Athletic Trainer.
