Safe Rides is a community service program that provides free and confidential safe rides home to teens (within certain bounda ... ries) who are not in a condition to drive safely, or to teens who want to avoid being a passenger in an unsafe situation. The idea behind Safe Rides originated in Darien, Connecticut. In one year, that community lost seven teenagers in DUI traffic collisions. Santa Clarita Valley Safe Rides was started in December 1986 because of the tragic deaths of six local teenagers between May 1985 and August 1986 due to alcohol-related traffic collisions. Government officials, community leaders, law enforcement, teachers and education administrators have acknowledged the significant contribution this vital program has provided in reducing teen deaths and improving Santa Clarita Valley road safety. read more
