San Francisco's Municipal Railway, known the world over as Muni, has served the citizens of San Francisco for over a century, ... literally rising from the ashes of the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Its colorful history is as unique as its fleet of buses, light rail vehicles, historic streetcars and iconic cable cars. Established by voter proposition in 1999, the SFMTA, a department of the City and County of San Francisco, oversees the Municipal Railway (Muni), parking and Traffic, bicycling, walking and taxis. With four modes of transit, Muni has approximately 700,000 daily passenger boardings. More than one million people traverse the city each day and rely on the SFMTA to ensure safe and reliable travel by transit, walking, bicycling, taxi and driving. The SFMTA is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors appointed by the mayor. The SFMTA Board has the authority to appoint the Executive Director, approve the budget and set agency policy. read more
