Salerno began in 1962 in a “Secondary Top” with 11 pupils in an upstairs classroom in Scoil Ide, Jesus & Mary Secondary Schoo ... l, Ardnamara, Salthill. Sr. Stanislaus was Principal. Pupils studied core subjects plus French, Latin, Art and Home Economics. First Year 1963 had 8 pupils. Choirs, orchestras, debating were very much part of the early Salerno school days. In 1965, the Secondary section of the school, 1st Years, 2nd Years and 3rd Years were re-located to the house known as “Salerno” on Revagh Road, Salthill. The First Pupils sat the Intermediate Certificate in a nearby school. Increasing numbers were accommodated in prefabricated classrooms “Green Prefab”, “Brown Prefab”, and “The Orchard Prefab”. The curriculum extended Science Room, Music Room and Commerce Room in the basement, Cookery Kitchen, Sewing Room and French Room on Ground Floor, Camogie played in the “The Swamp” (Still known as same in Salthill) and Swimming in Leisureland. A very strong Parents Committee formed in 1973. They worked tirelessly with staff to lobby and fundraise to obtain a new school for Salerno. The new school on Threadneedle Road was opened in 1981. Today Salerno includes many committed and hardworking teachers from the “Old Salerno”, some of whom were also pupils there. Strong bonds still exist between the “old and the new” and we are proud to say that the Jesus and Mary spirit and quality of care and concern, fun and enthusiasm for life still permeates Salerno. read more
