Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association (SAVNA) is a non-profit home health agency located in the city of Salem, Ohio. For over ... 100 years, SAVNA has provided services to all of Columbiana County, southern Mahoning County and eastern Stark County. The agency was started under the auspices of the National Red Cross in 1919, with the goal and purpose of visiting the sick and elderly community members. In 1950, the Salem Home Nursing Services incorporated as a non-profit agency. With the establishment of a Board of Directors and one registered nurse, they began serving patients. In 1959, care was extended to include the residents of Perry Township. Salem Home Nurse Association became Medicare certified in 1966 and changed the name to Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association. In 1968 SAVNA made 200 visits, this number increased to over 16,000 in 1988 and expansion resulted in new areas of expertise in the fields of Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Home Health Aides. In the fall of 2002 SAVNA purchased the YWCA property on N. Lincoln Ave. An 18400 sf single story building was erected that houses 4 different business, SAVNA, Salem Area Adult Daycare, Home Care Advantage and The Lincoln Learning Center. By providing access to these 4 services we are able to better serve all members of Columbiana County and their caregivers. By obtaining accreditation by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) in 1994, SAVNA is regarded as a leader in home health care services in northeast Ohio. SAVNA has grown and adapted to the regulations and reimbursement cutbacks enforced by Medicare and other 3rd party payers.
