No other factory in the world still manufactures its products the way that Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg does. In the last ... place where all products are made entirely by hand the term "manu factum" really does mean what it says. It is only the conscious decision not to use any kind of automated process that has produced the unequalled delicacy and quality of Nymphenburg porcelain. The porcelain paste – which other companies buy in as a semi-finished product – is made on site. Nymphenburg also creates and mixes its own paints; its porcelain painters work without templates. Each item is shaped and painted by hand, each ornament individually applied and all fretwork, be it ever so small, cut with tiny blades into the unfired porcelain. Nymphenburg consciously decided to continue to employ purely manual production methods and, since the 18th century, has refined them almost to perfection. WORKSHOPS In 1761, the porcelain maker's workshops were relocated to the circular building in the north of the palace grounds. Over time, the buildings located on the Würm canal were continuously added to. The workshops, which include original buildings dating from the late 18th century as well as the first hall made of corrugated iron sheeting to be built in Bavaria and – since 1929 – the manufactory's mould archives, constitute a record of the history of Nymphenburg. All the premises that Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg uses have been listed and placed under protection. ARTS AND DESIGN In Nymphenburg, handmade porcelain objects and works of art are manufactured according to the concepts of contemporary designers and artists who count among some of the most widely-renowned creators of art worldwide. Well-known designers like Konstantin Grcic, Hella Jongerius, Reed Kram and Clemens Weisshaar, fashion designers like Christian Lacroix, Vivienne Westwood and Gareth Pugh, and artists like Pae White, Carsten Höller, Olaf Nicolai, Wim Delvoye and Joep van Lieshout. read more
