We started our careers running the data science program for a California based clean-tech company. As part of this, we were often asked to solve a seemingly simple problem—gather data, make sense of it, and share that information with others. On the surface it seemed straight-forward—but once we collected, analyzed, sorted, etc., we were left with some pretty big questions. 1. How do we share what we’ve learned with others in a meaningful way? 2. How do we enable others to explore our data? 3. Can we give others access to the models to explore on their own? As we tried to address these questions, a more fundamental concern came to mind: how can businesses make meaningful use of data science, if its use and understanding are restricted to just a few individuals? This was the seed that started Plotly. When we first started to develop our technology, the tools for scientific and data analysis were not keeping pace with business needs.
