Phrateres ("fra-tair'eez") is a 90 year old organization for all women at university. Our purpose is the development of the i ... ndividual by introducing her to opportunities for leadership, unselfish service, participation in university or college activities and a well-balanced social life. The organization was founded at UCLA on December 10, 1924 by Dean Helen Matthewson Laughlin. As the Dean of Women, she noticed and received feedback that many women felt lost, friendless, and disconnected to their campus. Phrateres (Greek for 'kinship') was founded in order to offer opportunities for women where few existed before. We have kept our traditions of maintaining little barriers to participation through low fees, and non-exclusivity. Originally only meant to be a UCLA organization, news of the success of Phrateres spread to other universities. In 1929, the Beta chapter was established at the University of Washington. Between 1924 and 1967, 24 chapters of Phrateres were installed in school across North America. The Theta chapter was installed at UBC on February 1st, 1935, and is the only remaining active chapter of Phrateres. Our activities revolve around our 4S's: Sisterhood Sports Social Service In the process of planning, fundraising for, and participating in these ventures, we develop leaders and team players in society. We facilitate the development of our members through a supportive culture that encourages members to use their creativity and skills. The Theta chapter raises thousands of dollars and donates hundreds of volunteering hours for various charities annually. As well, alumni chapters are also active in their social and philanthropic endeavours. Phrateres makes each woman feel a real part of her university and better equips her for her role as a woman in today's world. Above all, Phrateres teaches that friendliness is the golden key to successful relations. read more
