The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) of the Texas Juvenile Justice Department was created by the Texas Legislature to in ... vestigate and preventing crimes committed by the departmental employees, and crimes and delinquent conduct committed at departmental facilities. This investigative authority extends to parole officers, and other facilities operating under contract with the department. The OIG also investigates allegations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation in juvenile justice facilities under the supervision of a juvenile board or under a contract with a department and which are under the regulation of the TJJD. The chief inspector is a commissioned peace officer, and is authorized to appoint additional peace officers to fulfill the statutory duties of the office which also include gang intelligence, contraband detection, fugitive apprehension, escape, and illegal entry into facilities. The chief inspector is appointed by, and reports directly to the TJJD governing board appointed by the Governor.
