New Milestones Foundation (NMF) is a 501(c)(3) and a 509 (a) Type (III) supporting organization founded in 1983. Its purpose ... is to expand awareness, eliminate stigma and provide financial support for the programs and populations served by Integral Care — formerly known as Austin Travis County MHMR— many of whom are among Austin's most vulnerable citizens. In its first few years, NMF took on several important functions. Grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provided housing for Integral Care's consumers and the New Milestones Foundation oversaw the management of these facilities, which today number seven apartment houses with 86 units. The organizations also purchased automobiles and vans for Integral Care programs. In 2001 NMF was re-energized and expanded its membership, and a plan to promote community awareness and fundraising were put into action. The Bridging the Gap Event, which has featured testimonials from celebrity speakers including Carrie Fisher, Christopher Kennedy Lawford, and Mariel Hemingway, has been held each year since 2002. In January of 2011 NMF completed an 18-month capital campaign, successfully raising $500,000 as part of a local match to refurbish two crisis respite facilities in Central Austin, and in 2013 it completed a $250,000 campaign (actually raising $283,000 including a grant for Family Preservation Services from the Texas Dept. of State Health Services) for children's mental health services. read more
