New England Newspapers, Inc. (NENI) publishes 3 daily newspapers – The Berkshire Eagle, The Bennington Banner and The Brattle ... boro Reformer – along with the weekly Manchester Journal. NENI also produces digital editions for each of its newspapers, and it operates a commercial printing business from its Pittsfield, Massachusetts base. In January 2017, NENI began producing it's newest publication, UpCountry Magazine. The Berkshire Eagle was owned and operated by the Miller family from 1892 until they sold the company to MediaNews Group, Inc. in 1995. During the 1960’s the family purchased neighboring publications thereby assembling NENI. The Berkshire Eagle, and to a lesser extent its sister newspapers, were renown in their field of community publications; in 1973, The Eagle won a Pulitzer Prize for its editorials. Media critic Ben Bagdikian was quoted saying that there were only 3 great newspapers in the world: Le Monde, The New York Times and The Berkshire Eagle. In May 2016, NENI was purchased by a group of 4 local investors who are committed to making it the finest group of community newspapers in America. The business plan is simple: increase the quality of the content which will increase the readership which will insure the company’s future. Additionally, we are innovating to create new lines of business to help us engage, drive results for advertisers and serve communities in our public service mission.
