Furthermore, the contrasts between the four seasons are dramatic; summers are warm with hot temperatures being experienced while winters are extremely cold, particularly in Lapland. Due to Finland's northern location, the number of hours of daylight throughout the year varies greatly. In mid-winter it becomes very dark in the afternoon but the amount of daylight increases rapidly in the spring, culminating in 24h midnight sun during the summer. Indeed, the Northern Lights are brighter only at the North Pole. Taking into account the changing seasons, it is easy to understand why the sauna originated in Finland and remains integral to Finnish culture. Many Finns like to take a dip in a lake after a sauna and there are plenty of lakes for them to choose from. Indeed, the most enthusiastic swimmers continue to indulge in their passion in the winter months, but to do so they have to first make a hole in the ice cover.
