The LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur unites 1,000 years of art, ranging from the early Middle Ages through to the present. It ... is the result of more than a century of collecting, research and teamwork. The permanent collection covers a total of more than 350,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings and prints, coins and objects, as well as 135,000 books. Around 1,300 exhibits are on display in the 51 exhibition spaces. The museum has achieved international recognition thanks to such highlights as the Soest Antependium, works by the tom Ring family of painters, the collections of expressionists artworks and of contemporary art with the Skulptur Projekte Archives. The LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur shows changing exhibitions across a floor space of approximately 1,000 square metres, with additional spaces for studio exhibitions and presentations of contemporary art. The curatorial team at the LWL-Museum develops large-scale exhibitions based on the collection and shown within an international context. The rich public programme adressing a wide range of visitors relates to the museum's exhibitions and displays. Since 1977, the museum has been the organizer of Skulptur Projekte every ten years, most recently in 2017, examining public space as a site for art. The LWL-Museum in the city centre of Münster – rebuilt by Staab Architekten Berlin – has been presenting itself as an art institution open to new ideas and a diverse public since 2014. It is distinguished by its architecture of courtyards, which welcomes the public to stroll through the institution. The most striking element of the new building is situated at the north entrance, the wedge-shaped prow of the building, pointing towards Münster’s cathedral. The light-flooded entrance lobby covering an area of 700 square metres and at a height of 14 metres is a breath-taking space. Sweeping staircases lead up to the spaces of the permanent collection on the upper floors. read more
