The permanent collection covers a total of more than 350,000 paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings and prints, coins and objects, as well as 135,000 books. Since 1977, the museum has been the organizer of Skulptur Projekte every ten years, most recently in 2017, examining public space as a site for art. The LWL-Museum in the city centre of Münster – rebuilt by Staab Architekten Berlin – has been presenting itself as an art institution open to new ideas and a diverse public since 2014. It is distinguished by its architecture of courtyards, which welcomes the public to stroll through the institution. The most striking element of the new building is situated at the north entrance, the wedge-shaped prow of the building, pointing towards Münster’s cathedral. The light-flooded entrance lobby covering an area of 700 square metres and at a height of 14 metres is a breath-taking space.
