BEACH HOUSE FAMILY SHELTER Beach House Family Shelter was founded in 1921 by Mrs. Helen (Beach) Jones – wife of former Toledo mayor Samuel "Golden Rule" Jones. Working with several local women’s organizations, Mrs. Jones helped to establish a shelter for homeless single women and women with children. Due to increased need and to keep families together, in the early 1980’s, Beach House began to include homeless intact families and single fathers with children. FOCUS was founded in 1982, based on the tradition of faith and service by several pastors with congregations in the Old West End neighborhood of Toledo, Ohio, in response to growing community needs for services such as longer-term supportive housing, food, and social support. Helping people regain independence and economic stability through education and employment has been the core work of both organizations, making our merger a natural evolution of housing and social supportive services in the area.
