The Jefferson Symphony Orchestra (JSO) is a 75-member community orchestra celebrating its 62nd Anniversary Season. The JSO be ... gan as the Mines Chamber Ensemble in 1953, allowing educators and students to share their passion for great music and performance. The name soon changed to Golden Civic Orchestra. In 1960, GCO received its not-for-profit designation as a 501(c)(3) organization. 1962 brought T. Gordon Parks as Music Director and Conductor. Maestro Parks is considered to be one of the true innovative forces in the genre of "volunteer community orchestras." In 1972, the name Jefferson Symphony Orchestra was adopted to reflect the organization's "countywide vision". In 1999, Dr. William Morse became Music Director and Principal Conductor, a position he holds to this day. The dedication, experience, and passion of our musicians and Maestro Morse result in professional quality music rarely found in volunteer orchestras. The symphony brings a quality of life to Jefferson County and beyond and is a valuable community resource for all to enjoy.
