The IDIBGI is a research centre within the Catalan Government’s CERCA network, which seeks to structure and develop high-qual ... ity research into biomedical science and public and community health and to promote the transfer of knowledge to everyday practice. The underlying goal is to address the health problems of Girona’s population. Structuring research requires coordination and providing an umbrella for the researchers in all the institutions involved: ICS [Doctor Josep Trueta University Hospital], IAP, ICO, UdG, IDI and IAS. Additionally, the IDIBGI seeks to reach even further and include all research carried out in the province of Girona in all of its public hospitals in order to create a critical mass capable of tackling major scientific and social challenges and guaranteeing that all the knowledge generated benefits society. The IDIBGI’s new building in the Martí i Julià Hospital Complex in Salt has been fitted out with research facilities in the healthcare area, as any research centre associated with a hospital will always be closely linked to healthcare. It all forms part of the same continuum in which research and healthcare are interconnected. In the healthcare environment, it is from contact with patients and their problems that research questions arise, forming the hypotheses of new lines of study. It is here that we also want the knowledge generated to return to benefit citizens and provide better medicine based on scientific evidence. Thus, it is clear that excellence in research leads to better healthcare. At the IDIBGI we are working along these lines: building a research network that links the entire region of Girona, from the border with France all the way to Blanes, Figueres and Camprodon. That is why it is so important to have a solid infrastructure that allows us to make a qualitative leap in biomedical research and health in the province of Girona. read more
