Herts at War is a county based not for profit organisation created with the specific aims of commemorating the centenary of t ... he Great War throughout the county of Hertfordshire. As a county Hertfordshire is both typical and unique. Like many other locations, thousands of servicemen left our towns and villages between 1914 and 1918, many never to return home, a tragedy that was repeated throughout the United Kingdom. However Hertfordshire's experiences on the home front were incredibly diverse and unique. Belgian Refugees, Zeppelin Raids, Conscientious Objectors, Armaments Factories, military hospitals and even a German workers colony were just a few of the issues that affected everyday life. Herts at War will uncover and re-tell the stories of those who experienced life during the Great War, both at home and abroad. With our dedicated team of volunteers we will paint a picture of life 100 years ago in 'real-time' that will serve to commemorate, educate and remember those who came before. The Project was launched in 2012 and has since developed a series of 'strands' that combine to form the project as a whole. With remembrance as our main motivation, we will build a legacy for Great War history within the county that we feel will serve as a platform for remembrance of the sacrifices made by our ancestors a century ago. read more
