A registration permit shall cost $50.00 and shall be good for one year expiring December 31st annually. A $25.00 penalty will be charged to anyone who fails to renew their permit after January 31st. In simple terms, this is the tax on water service. At the 2018 legislative session, the Iowa legislature passed a new law, SF 512, effective July 1, 2018, which created a Water Service Excise Tax (WET). Prior to the enactment of this law, the sale of water was subject to the 6% state sales tax (plus 1% local option sales tax where applicable).
