Farms for City Children is a charity that provides subsidised countryside residentials for inspiring children from inner citi ... es and those facing disadvantage. A fantastic place for school groups (KS2/KS3) to become immersed in a hands-on living laboratory, and a joyful opportunity for other groups of children such as looked-after children, young carers, youth centres, refugees, military children, and others to experience the joy of purposeful discovery in a peaceful rural environment. The groups of children and young people (normally ages 8 - 13 years) who stay for a week on our farms become part of our team, helping to make sure the livestock are fed and cared for, that the produce in the kitchen gardens and polytunnels is watered and tended, and that the farmyard and countryside environment are well maintained. Children have the opportunity to harvest and learn to cook with fresh veggies from the garden, collect eggs from our hens, feed and check the health of sheep or cows, groom and muck out the donkeys or ponies, play in acres of lush green fields, and experience the awe inspiring milky way in all her dark skies beauty. This experience of rural life allows children to learn new skills, but most importantly the week at the farm gives children an opportunity to grow in self confidence and self belief and to develop new and lasting communication skills and friendships as they work together to undertake practical and purposeful farming tasks. Our farms in Devon, Pembrokeshire and Gloucestershire host one group of up to 39 children per week, throughout the year. All groups must be accompanied by a minimum of 4 suitably qualified and safeguarding trained adults, who remain in loco parentis. As a charity we raise £1.5m / year to subsidise the cost to schools and other groups. This allows us to guarantee a 60% subsidy to all groups, and we have an Access Fund that may be able to provide additional funding for particularly disadvantaged groups. read more
