Clínica Tepati is one of the eight student-run non-profit healthcare clinics based under the UC Davis School of Medicine. Clí ... nica Tepati provides free health care services to the uninsured and underserved populations of the Sacramento areas, with an emphasis in the care of the Latinx/Chicanx community. Clinica Tepati operates under the three main tenants of its mission: healthcare, education, and advocacy. Clínica Tepati was established in 1974, driven by the passion and dedication of a group of UC Davis students and faculty from the medical school. Our founders set out to address serious long-term issues in the healthcare delivery system and to integrate primary care involvement that is usually excluded in the traditional medical curriculum. They established a three-part mission of health services, education, and advocacy geared towards their desire to serve the vulnerable segment of the Latino community as part of the growing Chicano Movement in the 70s. With the support of community members and the UC Davis Department of Family and Community Medicine, the project gave rise to Clínica Tepati. “Tepatli,” the Nahuatl word for “healer,” was chosen as the symbol for incorporating cultural identity with a genuine desire to serve. Although an increasingly diverse group of patients seek and receive care at our clinic, the overwhelming majority of patients that we serve continue to self-identify as Latino/Hispanic. Spanish is the primary language spoken by the majority of our patients and we strive to provide culturally competent care for patients to express their needs.
