The City of Brookings, SD has operated the telephone, electric, water and wastewater since the early 1900's. These enterprise ... funds were managed and controlled by the City Commission until 1970 when the community voted to vest management and control in an autonomous, five member, Utility Board, appointed by the Mayor and City Commission. In 1997, the community approved a Home Rule Charter and in 1999, it adopted the Council-Manager form of Government. The telephone utility is a major component of BMU, providing both wireline service to the Brookings community and wireless service as a Sprint PCS affiliate to eastern South Dakota and northwest Iowa. Local telephone service is provided under the name Swiftel Communications. The electric utility is a distribution utility which purchase approximately 35 percent of its power from federal hydro-facilities and approximately 65% from a joint action municipal power agency. Our delivery capacity is approximately 120 MW with a current peak of 60 MW. Two well fields, one with six wells and one with four wells, supply the water system. Two water plants, a 2.5 MGD plant and a 4.0 MGD plant, supply water to the distribution system with four water towers. The city is located over an abundant source of high quality water, free of heavy metals and organic contaminants. Our wastewater plant and interceptor line system was constructed in 1980, and has recently undergone renovations. The 6 MGD plant utilizes activated sludge and sand filters and has consistently met all EPA standards. The collections system is made up of 84 miles of pipe and 4 lift stations. read more
