Founded in 1911, Bethel was named after a floating chapel, the Bethel Ship John Wesley, which had docked in New York Harbor in 1845 to help newly arrived Swedish immigrants. This ship was later replaced by the New Bethel Ship John Wesley. In 1914, the Bethel Swedish Methodist Episcopal Home for the Aged opened its doors in Brooklyn, New York to serve the needs of New York City's growing senior population. The Home expanded and in 1920, relocated to Ossining, New York.
